AN INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC l For advanced musicians of all kinds of genres!


Starting with a short introduction to Indian classical music we learn about Indian melodic & rhythmic.
Using ancient exercises for finding the right tuning of a note we are going to open up our ears.
Playing around with simple Indian classical melodies and rhythmic elements we get a complete new approach to improvisation.

The content of the workshop:

1. The History of Indian Classical Music

2. Indian Melodic

The Raag (Sanskrit: Raga)
10 Thaats (basic scales)
The Melodic Structure
Shrutis (Microtones)

3. Indian Rhythmic

Tala (rhythmic cycle)
Rhythmical Structure of Classical Compositions
Tehai: a rhythmical element used for ending a solo phrase. It consists of one motif, which is repeated three times. On the third repetition the last note has to come on the one (sam) of the rhythmic cycle that is being played.
